This October: The Motherf**ker with the Hat

This October: The Motherf**ker with the Hat

Can Jackie cope with life after prison?
Can he save his relationship with Veronica?
And just precisely who is the motherf**ker with the hat?

Join East West Theatre this October for the Shanghai premiere
of Stephen Adly Guirgis’ hit play.

Jackie, freshly released and newly sober is trying to navigate the moral complexities of life in the Bronx. Can AA sponsor Ralph and cousin Julio’s empanadas help him make the right choices? Can he deal with the shocking realities of being in love with an addict? Will he continue to uphold the principles he learned during a childhood on the streets, or has something changed?

If you are easily offended by foul language, please avoid this play – it is not wholesome, and it is not sweet. However, it is astonishingly funny, and it is a highly-provocative exploration of life on the edge of society. If you enjoy entertaining, cool, streetwise, modern comedy you should reserve your tickets now.

Living a modern urban life – in Shanghai just as in New York – exposes us to constant moral choices. We all need to choose the right and wrong of how we make a living, who we sleep with, who we lie to, who we cheat, and who we steal from. Once we reach adulthood, how many of us are really able to change our morality? How many people do you know who have made a concerted effort to improve their moral behaviour? Have any of them actually succeeded? And do you know any hypocrites, pretending to be morally superior, but actually breaking their own standards in secret?

Could someone who grew up on the streets of the Bronx in a marginalized immigrant community, who has been involved in drugs and crime all his life, actually change and grow into a morally-sound person? Come to The Motherf**ker with the Hat to find out.

Since 2011 this cool, streetwise, and exciting exploration of moral relativism has been enthralling audiences with its “high-octane verbal cage match about love, fidelity and misplaced haberdashery”.
